What To Do If Your AC Unit is Broken?

What Should You Do if Your AC Unit Breaks?

One of the worst discoveries you can encounter during the summer is a broken air conditioner. Even just one day without relief from the scorching heat is unthinkable, and you might not even be sure where to begin identifying the problem or how to fix it. Heat waves are on the rise, so it's important to make sure that you know exactly how to respond when your A/C stops working.

Know the Warning Signs

Lookout for subtle signs that your air conditioner might be broken. Listen closely for any noises such as wheezing, screeching, thumping and whistling coming from your outside unit, which may indicate a blockage.

If your air conditioner turns off and on again, it may be short-cycling due to low levels of refrigerant or have a clogged air filter. You can easily replace your system's air filter by purchasing a new one at the store. If you aren't sure what type of filter to buy, check to see if the dimensions are listed anywhere on the filter. If not, pull out a tape measure and write down the width, length and depth in inches.

Check if It's Blowing Hot Air

When your air conditioner only blows hot air, it's most likely run out of the refrigerant it uses to cool your home. Lack of refrigerant can also overheat your entire system, leading to a total breakdown or expensive damages that will result in expensive repairs. If your system takes R-22 refrigerant, commonly known as Freon, you'll need to speak with an HVAC technician to find a replacement, as R-22 is being phased out by the Environmental Protection Agency.

If your air conditioner only blows hot air, turn it off immediately to prevent it from raising the temperature in your home to dangerous levels. Use fans or even a portable model until you schedule an appointment with an HVAC professional to replace the refrigerant.

Practice Regular Maintenance

Annual or biannual air conditioner tune-ups can help preserve the lifespan of your system and catch any problems before they cause trouble. Most central air conditioners are designed to last 12 to 14 years, but mishaps happen, and they can break down beforehand.

Regular maintenance ensures that your system is backed under its warranty, which may require routine servicing to cover a replacement.
