What Should I Do if My Heater Stops Working?

The cold winds of winter have arrived and the heater is running full blast. Then, something happens. It stops working or is blowing cold air. What do you do? Here are six things you can do before calling an HVAC professional.

#1 Check the Thermostat

You wouldn't believe the number of calls we get where the only problem is an improperly set thermostat. Take a minute to verify your thermostat is set properly. Make sure it's turned on and in the "heat" position. Check the desired temperature is set properly. Verify the fan is in "auto" mode so it will turn on when the furnace turns on.

#2 Check the Air Filter

A clogged filter can interfere with the flow of air into the furnace. Without this flow of air, the furnace may not be able to heat enough air to war the entire house. If the air filter is clogged, it can cause the heating system to overheat and shut down prematurely. Check the air filter and change it if it's dirty. Do this at least once a month to avoid this issue.

#3 Check the Blower Motor Panel

There's a safety switch on your furnace's blower motor panel. If the panel isn't completely shut, the furnace won't turn on. It may have been left open after a service call. Take a moment to verify that panel is closed tightly.

#4 Check the Furnace Gas Valve

If you have a gas furnace, make sure the gas valve is in the "on" position, which is parallel to the line. Turn it on, if it's off. It may have been turned off after a service call or turned off by someone in the house.

#5 Check Your Electrical Panel

Your furnace's blower motor runs on electricity. If the electrical breaker trips, it prevents the motor from starting. Check the panel to make sure all breakers associated with the heating system are "on." If a breaker has tripped, reset it and try turning on the furnace. If it still doesn't work, call an HVAC professional for help.

#6 Check Your Air Ducts

The furnace may be working, but some of your rooms are colder than others. The culprit may be your air ducts. Make sure the vents and dampers are fully open to allow heated air to come into the room. If they are open, you may have gaps or holes in the air ducts.
