Can Pests Enter My Home Through My HVAC System?

As the weather gets warmer, you may see an increase in bugs in your home. Bugs are looking for something to eat and a way to get cool. One of the most common entry points is through your HVAC system.

Can Bugs Get in Through My HVAC System?

Yes, insects can find their way into your HVAC system. HVAC systems offer an ideal home for bugs. There is always a fresh water supply from the condensation drain and provides a place to hide. When the system is on, it also creates a warm place for the bugs at night. An HVAC system provides total access to your home via the return vents and ductwork system. The good news is that there are several different ways that you can keep these pests out of your home.

What Kinds of Bugs Get In?

Bugs found in HVAC systems include flies, cockroaches, ants, mosquitoes, spiders, and flies. Some of these can pose a serious health risk. That is why you will want to do all that you can to ensure that these pests do not gain entry into your home.

Ways to Prevent Pests from Entering Your Home

To stop these bugs from entering in through your HVAC system, there are several things you can do. These things include:

  • Fill in holes. Go to your outside unit and look to see if there are any cracks or holes where the piping goes into the house. If you see a hole fill it in with caulk. Even the tiniest of holes can be a door to bugs, so make sure that you inspect it.
  • Landscaping. Keep up with the landscaping around your outdoor unit. Trees, shrubs, or any other plant should be two to three feet away from the outdoor unit. These are excellent hiding places for bugs. Keeping them away from your system will help keep them out of your home.
  • Ductwork. You will want to have your ductwork inspected every so often. If there are any holes in your ductwork, it makes a perfect entryway for pests. If there are any holes in your ductwork, having them repaired immediately will help keep the bugs out.
  • Scheduling a tune-up. Consider scheduling a tune-up with your local HVAC professional. They can help to ensure that your unit is clean and not a hospitable home for bugs.
