Why Is My House Not Cooling Down?

Are you still feeling uncomfortable in your home even if there’s an air conditioning system running? What if the unit is new, but you’re not sensing the comfort you were looking forward to? It isn’t always the fault of the unit in cases like this. Here are some of the most common causes that is preventing your home from getting the right temperature you are expecting:

  • Heat Passing Through the Window

There are types of windows that allow heat to get through; these are usually the older types. The warmth may feel good during winter; however, it obviously wouldn’t feel the same during summer.  You can have a curtain to cover the heat or perhaps during the hottest part of the day. Some might suggest a low-emissivity film on the window to block the sun rays.

  • Ductwork Issues

This is a significant part of the components of your air conditioning system. This is where the heated or cooled air passes throughout your home. If there is a problem with the ductwork it would definitely cause discomfort since it would cause the unit having a hard time to create whether a heated air or a cold air.

  • Insulation is insufficient

Insulations could sometimes prevent the warm air from escaping which would cause a warm air within the house. It must be at the same levels with the wall studs and floor joists. The R-value is very important to consider which indicates the resistance to heat.

  • Refrigerant Leaks

Old units’ leaks small amounts of refrigerants but sometimes it leaks too much of it and it gets in contact with moisture which would then freeze. Frozen refrigerants can block the passage and prevents the unit from the cooling property. Make sure to have your AC serviced annually.

  • Air Filter Replacement

It is advisable to replace the air filter as often as manufacturers would suggest. There are a lot of possible causes that could obstruct airflow through the filters; these are dust, pollen, and other debris. If this happens you will feel warm inside your house.

  • Thermostat

You have to double check if your thermostat is still working fine or if it may need new batteries. Also you have to make sure that the temperature set is cooler than the temperature from the outside.

As always it is still better to consult the professionals in terms of problems like this. Technicians would know what to do, just like these quick troubleshooting tips. Here is some of it:

  • Checking the breakers in the panel. There might be a problem from the inside unit or from the outside.

  • You may also check on the disconnect breaker from the outside unit.

  • Have them check the filters too if they are clean and not completely clogged.

  • Check if the green light in the utility service in not on, if so, you know what to do.

  • And as what was mentioned from the above, it is always best to check the thermostat.
