6 Ways to Stay Warm During the Holiday Season

Easy Ways to Stay Warm and Cozy During the Holiday

As the cold winter weather hits, you and your family need a quality home heating system. Not only will it allow you to remain comfortable and safe it will protect the integrity of your home. Fortunately, there are many easy ways that you can help to keep your home warm without having to turn up your thermostat.

Use a Programmable Thermostat

One of the best things you can do to optimize wintertime heating while saving energy is to be strategic with your thermostat. Investing in a programmable thermostat will allow you to set lower temperatures during the day when no one is home. Then, you can set a hot temperature in the evening to keep your family comfortable. The more capable you can optimize your thermostat, the lower your energy bills will be.

Winterize Your Home

Any leaks around your doors and windows can let the cold winter weather seep into your home. The best thing you can do is stop it by winterizing your windows and doors. Put weatherstripping around your windows and doors to fill in the gaps.

Use Ceiling Fans

While ceiling fans are commonly used in the summer to help your family feel cool, they can also be used in the wintertime by reversing the direction of your ceiling fan. This will allow it to force air up, out, and down the side walls of your rooms. This will recirculate the hot air to stay warm without turning up the thermostat.

Add Rugs

Rugs can be a great addition to any home decor. And they're great for providing an adequate layer of insulation between your feet and the floor. The less you walk on hardwood, vinyl, tile, and other hard surfaces, the warmer your feet will be. Consider adding rugs to the most widely used rooms of your home.

Use Layers

A great way to help reduce heating costs in the winter while staying comfortable is to dress in layers. Instead of hanging around in shorts, try putting on some sweatpants. Use a sweatshirt to take off the chill instead of turning your thermostat off. Even a pair of good wool socks can help keep the cold weather from creeping into your body.

Take Advantage of Zone Heating

If your heating system offers zoning, then use it to your advantage. Turn the temperature down in rooms that don't get much traffic. Even bedrooms can be turned down a bit since it's easier to sleep in a cool temperature than a warm one. If you have an alternative heat source, like a fireplace, consider burning wood in those rooms instead of turning up the thermostat.
